BARNESVILLE – Last week in this space I wrote about three teams seeking perfection. Well, all three achieved their spotless 10-0 regular seasons, none more, however, than Barnesville.
The Shamrocks ran their regular-season winning streak to a whopping 36 consecutive games with a dominant win over western Belmont County rival Union Local, which carried a lofty 8-1 mark into the contest.
However, the game didn’t live up to the hype as Barnesville controlled from the start in a 55-14 triumph. The Shamrocks senior class won for a remarkable 39th time in 40 regular season games.
“It’s a culture thing,” Barnesville quarterback Casey Carpenter said. “We practice hard in practice, we don’t talk back or anything and we listen to our coaches and their game plan.
“It’s amazing what this senior class has accomplished. I love these guys and we are ready to keep playing football.”
St. Clairsville and Steubenville also secured 10-0 records as the Red Devils overwhelmed Cambridge 55-8 and Steubenville took down Long Island (NY) Lutheran 35-14.
Running Wild
Martins Ferry’s tandem of Tev’n Williams and Walkquem Cox helped the Purple Riders bring SPARKY back to the Purple City with a 34-8 nod over Bellaire. Williams, a senior, lugged the rock 31 times for 200 yards, while Cox, just a freshman, had 184 yards and reached the end zone on four of his 20 carries. His TD runs covered 35, 12, 24 and 5 yards.
Barnesville’s Trey Toliver went for 137 yards on 14 carries, also reaching the end zone four times on runs of 64, 1, 2 and 4 yards.
Union Local’s Brody Perzanowski continued his outstanding season, despite a losing effort, with 213 yards on 21 carries, including a 65-yard TD run on the first play of the third quarter.
Wheeling Park’s Brennan Wack exploded for 271 yards on 26 totes, scoring on runs of 5, 45 and 5 yards as the Patriots took down Talawanda High School in Oxford.
Passing Time
Wheeling Park’s Jay Bordas threw for 257 yards and a trio of touchdowns. His scoring tosses went for 15, four and 30 yards.
Steubenville’s Aiden Davis was 9 of 11 for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Barnesville’s Casey Carpenter went 11 of 14 for 256 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring tosses went to Bradey McIntire and Koby Jones, both covering 54 yards.
Linsly’s Braden Wade completed 19 of 41 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to Parkersburg South.
Doing It All
Wheeling Park’s Jameson Maynard was a one-player destruction crew as he had seven receptions, two for touchdowns, while also recording 10 total tackles, nine being solo. He intercepted a pass and four of his tackles were behind the line of scrimmage.
Buckeye Local’s Alex McDiffitt ran for 183 yards and two TDs and passed for 70 more in the Panthers’ loss to Harrison Central.
Magnolia’s Landon Street had two interceptions, recovered a fumble and ran 18 yards for a touchdown as the Blue Eagles kept Ravenswood winless, 30-14.
Wheeling Central’s Nico Kusic passed for 181 yards and three TDs and ran for 74 yards and a touchdown – a 46-yard jaunt – as the Maroon Knights held off Toronto, 29-27. He found Kade Koroneos from 62; Braden McWreath from 39 and Joey Hall from 33. He also ran for two points and threw a two-point pass.
Returns For Six
Wheeling Park’s Owen Dobrzynski ran a kickoff back for 98 yards.
St. Clairsville’s Elijah Bell had a scoop-and-score after he blocked a Cambridge punt.
Double Picks
Barnesville’s Cole Francis and Eli Messenger both had a pair of interceptions last week.
Getting Their Kicks
Steubenville’s Cole Bowers extended his school-record with five PATs.
Barnesville’s Evan Lough knocked through seven extra-points.
Wheeling Park’s A.J. Seals also had seven PATs.
