High School Roundup: Wheeling Park Prevails On Road vs. Big Reds; Purple Riders Advance To Districts

PARKERSBURG – The Wheeling Park Patriots picked up a road win Thursday over the Parkersburg Big Reds, 4-1, behind a pair of goals from senior Tresz McLeod.

McLeod started the evening’s scoring with a header off an assist from Max Seibert. Ike Aderholt scored in the waning seconds of the first half to put the Patriots up 2-0 heading into the locker rooms.

Tresz McLeod scored on a penalty kick and Wilson Hanna put the finishing touches on the night as Wheeling Park improved to 16-3.

VOLLEYBALL

Martins Ferry def. Tuscarawas Valley 17-25, 25-23, 27-25, 18-25, 19-17

ZOARVILLE – The Purple Riders pulled out all the stops against the Trojans on Wednesday, going the full five sets to upset the No. 3 seed in Division V, Region 19.

No. 5 Martins Ferry dropped the first set before winning the next two, the third set going into extended play. Tusky Valley won the fourth set to force a golden set which also went into extended play.

Many Purple Riders had outstanding performances across the five-set odyssey, with sophomore Giana Chirpas and senior Lindsey Best both topping 20 kills. Chirpas finished with 27 kills and six blocks, while Best had 21 kills and 13 digs.

Maddie Lucas totaled 14 digs and three aces, and Nicole Hammerquist finished with five kills and two blocks.

Libero SJ Koller led the team with 44 digs along with two aces. Olivia Harkness served up 52 assists for Ferry.

Martins Ferry now advances to districts where they will play No. 2 Coshocton on Monday at 6 p.m. at a site to be announced.

BOYS SOCCER

Brooke 7, Oak Glen 1

WELLSBURG – The Bruins downed the Golden Bears on Wednesday in a battle between neighboring counties.

Brooke’s Chase Hile was a one-man wrecking crew against Oak Glen with five goals and an assist on the day. Evan Urso was his mirror image with five assists and one goal in another impressive performance.

Gabe Keener tallied a goal and Cooper Byers an assist for the Bruins. Jordan Tomsic scored Oak Glen’s lone goal.

Chance Brozstek recorded the win in goal with nine saves. Kyle Greenlief had 17 saves for Oak Glen.

Brooke is now 7-10-3 on the season.
