Marshall Memo: Free Movies, Health Screenings And Vaccinations Available

The Marshall County Strings Program will present its annual fall concert at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the John Marshall High School Center for Performing Arts.

The concert will feature middle and high school students, all dressed in festive costumes, performing a variety of music including spooky seasonal selections.

Admission for the concert will be $5 for adults, $1 for students (K-12), and free for children 5 and under. Marshall County Schools Activity Passes and Marshall County Student ID will be accepted in lieu of concert admissions.

The Cameron High School homecoming queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity football game against Valley High School on Friday. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Dragon Stadium.

Queen candidates will be Nevaeh Dufford, Maci Neely, Devan Schrack and Sarah Yoss.

The CHS homecoming king will be crowned during the dance on Saturday.

King candidates are Camden Frye, Slaton Pettit, Mason Scott and Klypsan Wallace.

Everyone is invited to see all the queen and king candidates at the CHS Homecoming Parade on Friday evening on Oct. 10. The parade will begin at 5:30.

Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy announced several updates prior to Tuesday’s council meeting.

The Street Department has completed the concrete street repairs on Third Street and Mulberry Avenue. The repairs for the Second Street and Elm Avenue intersection and Annandale Avenue have been awarded to JD&E with work to begin soon.

Rain has slowed the work on the 2024 Paving Program. Base layers have been completed in most locations, with finish coats delayed four different days due to weather. Additional work at the 12th Street walking area has been completed.

The city had an on-site inspection this past Thursday with the Federal Emergency Management Agency concerning damage from the April flood events.

The city has submitted all of the required information and hopes to have everything approved for reimbursement soon.

The installation is complete for the outdoor fitness center at the East End Playground. A ribbon-cutting/grand opening will take place at 4:30 pm. Oct. 16.

At the recent ÀÏ˾»úÖ±²¥ meeting of the Moundsville Lions Club, two students were honored as Leos of the Month. They were Addyson Hill from Moundsville Middle School and Meredeth Tucker from John Marshall High School.

Hill is very active not only with Leos but also with other activities at school, while Tucker was chosen for her community and school activities.

Among other ÀÏ˾»úÖ±²¥ discussed by the club was that the Lions would be involved with trick or treat on Oct. 23 at the Moundsville Center, bell ringing for the Salvation Army at Walmart on Nov. 30 and helping to line up the Christmas parade participants on Nov. 23.

Gene Saunders reported that applications for glasses have increased this year, and that people with old glasses can donate them by bringing them to the meetings on Tuesdays at the Guest House.

Further speakers will include Kristine Quinn, the district leader, and Jill Spangler from WVU Medicine Wheeling and Reynolds Memorial hospitals. Those who want information about the club can contact Stan Stewart, Eva Dauge or any Lions member.

The final two days of the Moundsville Library book sale will take place today (Saturday) and Monday. The time on Saturday will be 10 a.m. until noon, while Monday’s time will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Strand Theatre will have a Halloween craft and movie event sponsored by Gold, Khourey and Turak on Oct. 26. The craft will be at 1:15 p.m. with the movie “Monster House” beginning at 2 p.m.

Screening of the iconic film “The Night of the Hunter” featuring shots of the Moundsville Penitentiary and Moundsville’s Fish Creek and starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish will also be held at the Strand on Oct. 26. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the movie show time at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 with tickets available at the door.

Marshall County Health Department Administrator Jo Ann Dobbs released the schedule for the remainder of the month of October clinics and programs. They are:

Immunization Clinic–Mondays from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. All adult vaccines, regular childhood and back-to-school immunizations are available by appointment only.

COVID-19 vaccines are available Mondays from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. by appointment only.

PPD (TB) skin testing is done Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., also by appointment only.

On Oct. 15, family planning exams and a breast and cervical screening program will be held by appointment only.

The Marshall County FRN’s General Membership meeting will be held online at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The general membership meeting is a way to share information and to learn about activities and programs going on in the community.

Each member who wants to participate will have an opportunity to briefly discuss their organization and updates during the meeting.

The FRN’s general membership meetings are held quarterly on the second Tuesday of the month. For 2025, meetings are scheduled for Jan. 14, April 6, July 8 and Oct. 14.

Seven months ago, work on a new City Hall stopped, but within two weeks it will resume thanks to City Manager Rick Healy and council members. In announcing the restart of the project, Healy said, “We are extremely happy to put this behind us.”

Vice Mayor David Wood was very pleased with the work by individuals such as Healy, who kept council members informed every step of the way.
