Marshall Memo: School Staff Changes, a Holiday Play, and ÀÏ˾»úÖ±²¥˜We ServeÀÏ˾»úÖ±²¥™

Four Marshall County school personnel were approved as Class of 2028 advisors by the board of education this past Tuesday.

They were Brandice Walton, Jennifer Yates, Kylie Krieger and Derek Martin.

Both Walton and Yates will be advisors at John Marshall High School, while Krieger and Martin will be class advisors at Cameron High School.

Hattie DeBolt will become department head of CTE and Fine Arts at CHS.

In other matters:

Resignations include Brice Brennan as Leo Club advisor at Sherrard Middle School, Debra Higginson as Bus Safety Team, countywide, and Morgan Piatt, aide/autism mentor.

Employments/Transfers included: Tena Strickland from teacher of multi-cat with autism, Sand Hill/Sherrard, to teacher of elementary education at Sand Hill.

Bus Operators

Adrian Adam from bus operator (Rte X) to bus operator (half-time) Route 3 (countywide).

Christina Wetherell from bus operator, Route 77, to bus operator, Route 71, McMechen.

Custodians

John Mercer from Custodian III, John Marshall High School to custodian Moundsville Middle School.

Jillian Wright from Long Term Temporary Cook II, Cameron High School, to Cameron School.

Zane Clutter, assistant girls basketball coach Cameron High to Season Citizen Coach.

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library will have a special after-hours event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, when JoAnn Peterson of Kingwood, W.Va., will bring another remarkable woman of history to life in a first-person portrayal of Jenny Lind.

This entertaining and informative event will be free and open to the public and aimed at adults and school age children.

Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, was a world-renowned opera singer, philanthropist, and woman of great faith whom Mendelssohn called “the most gifted artist of the century.” She inspired Hans Christian Anderson to pen “The Snow Queen.”

Other historical figures Peterson portrays include Shirley Temple Black, Mary Todd Lincoln, Molly Brown (of Titanic fame) and founding Mother Abigail Adams.

Peterson is a presenter with the West Virginia Humanities Council Alive! program and has written and performed, “A Mother’s Heart Divided, A WV Civil War Story.”

The Moundsville library program is sponsored by the Robert Baker Family and will be held in the downstairs meeting room.

The Strand Theatre announces auditions for its all-youth winter production, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

The classic animated television special comes to life in this 30-minute stage adaptation in which Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang discover the true meaning of Christmas. Renee Storm will direct, Leslie Garrett will serve as music director, and Meta Lasch will serve as technical director. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Strand.

Call back will be the following day at at 2 p.m.

Rehearsals will begin in mid-October.

A complete schedule will be created following auditions and distributed at the first rehearsal.

Staff member Amy Nickerson of the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office will meet one-on-one with Marshall County residents to discuss consumer-related issues and answer any questions from 11 a.m. until noon on Sept. 25 at the Marshall County Senior Citizen Center at 805 Fifth St., Moundsville.

“These public events are a great way for consumers in talk one-on-one with our consumer representatives,” Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said. He added, “Residents can easily get questions answered, learn what is going on in their area and learn how to keep personal information safe and secure.”

Marshall County Schools will be be presenting “Looking Out for Our Kid”‘ on Tuesday at John Marshall High School’s Center for Performing Arts from 5:30-7 p.m.

It is free and open to the public and will feature speaker Michelle Toman.

The title for the program is “A Suicide Loss Survivor Creating Change.” It will focus on suicide prevention, including trauma informed care awareness from the perspective of a family survivor and resources for families and educators.

It will be hosted by the WJMH Media Anchor, headed by Audrey Ferguson.

The first meeting of the Marshall County Association of Retired School Employees, or MCARSE, for this school year will be at noon Sept. 19 at Perkins Restaurant in Moundsville. It will consist of a meeting and a program.

Donations will be collected to benefit Stonerise Nursing Home in Moundsville.

Lions Club District Governor Dave Roberts shared information Tuesday at the Moundsville Lions Club meeting, where he was welcomed by President Shelby Haines.

Roberts shared information from the Lions International Conference, which he recently attended in Sydney, Australia.

He complimented the group on the service projects that were recently completed because “We Serve.”

He presented service pins to membership chair Stan Stewart and the club’s newest member JoAnn Dobbs.

It was noted that anyone interested in joining the club should attend one of Tuesday’s noon meetings held at the Guest House.

Residents of Marshall County who might need a little help this holiday season will be able to register for Christmas Assistance online beginning Monday, followed by in-person signup through October.
