CONSTANCE GROSS
Constance “Connie” Sue Gross, 77, of Shadyside, Ohio passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at WVU Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, West Virginia.
Connie was born May 30, 1947 in Bellaire, Ohio a daughter to the late Leonard and Eleanor (Helms) Cross.
She graduated from Shadyside High School in 1965 and was a Methodist by faith. She attended the Lincoln United Methodist Church in Shadyside, Ohio.
She served with distinction at the Central Intelligence Agency from 1969 until her retirement in 1994, contributing to critical operations in locations around the globe including Kigali, Rwanda; Lisbon, Portugal; Leningrad, U.S.S.R.; South America; Western Europe; and the Far East.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Connie was an active member of her community. She was involved with the Wheeling Newcomers Club, where she cherished the monthly social meetings and annual Christmas parties. Her commitment to civic duty was evident through her past membership on the Shadyside Village Council and the Shadyside Library Board. Continuing her engagement with her alma mater, she was serving as a trustee of the Shadyside Alumni Board.
Connie’s compassionate nature was also reflected in her early work with John Mattox at the Special Wish Foundation, helping to shape the organization in its formative years. Connie’s life was a testament to her tireless devotion to her country and community.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Bruce Cross.
She is survived by her loving husband whom she married in 1966, Louis “Fred” Gross; sisters, Debbie Worley, Claudia (Luke) Johnson, Tammy Cross; brother-in-law, Charles (Lisa) Gross; nephews, Derek Johnson, David Gross, Erik Gross, Ryan (Olivia) Gross; nieces, Angela (Jeremy) Cross, Bree (Justin) Cain, Jennifer (Mark) Gross; great-niece, Taylor (Zach) Frizzi; great-great nephews, Luca Frizzi, Liam Frizzi; cousins, Reed (Joann) Gross and Richard Gross.
Family and friends are to be received at the Bauknecht- Altmeyer Funeral Home 3900 Central Avenue on Friday, December 6, from 4-8pm. Additional visitation on Saturday, December 7, from 10am until time of service at 11am with Pastor Robert “Bob” Carson Jr. officiating. Burial to follow at Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatan Point, Ohio.
