WENDELL HANLIN

Wendell Allen Hanlin, age 89, of Wheeling, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at home.

He was born February 22, 1935, son of the late Carl and Mary Roberts Hanlin.

He graduated from Sherrard High School, attended West Liberty State College, and retired from Wheeling Power, formerly Wheeling Electric Company, where he worked in the engineering department for 30 years. As a member of the Sand Hill United Methodist Church, he held various offices and served on many committees. Among those were cemetery administrator, chairman of the church trustees, and treasurer of both the church and the Dallas Charge.

Wendell was Master of Wheeling Lodge No. 5 A.F. & A.M. of WV for 4 years and secretary for 13 years. Wendell was the youngest person in WV at the time to become a Master Mason. He was a member of the Osiris Shrine of Wheeling and the Royal Order of Jesters Court No. 13. The Masonic Lodge was an important part of Wendell’s life.

Wendell didn’t retire to the couch, but to a workshop where he made furniture and crafts for his family and friends. In addition to his wood-working, he had a large garden and many fruit trees which produced peaches and apples.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister: Elaine Dougherty.

Survivors include his loving wife, of 64 years: Louella “Lou” Hazlett Hanlin; three daughters: Jill (Scott) Hayden of Martinsburg, WV, Jennifer (Gregg) Xenakes of Wilmington, DE, and Julie Taylor of Annapolis, MD; five granddaughters: Jordan (Matt) Leonard, Taryn (Andy) Creigh, Kelsey & Emily Taylor, and Nickole Xenakes; two great-grandchildren: Virginia Claire & Oliver Allen Leonard; one sister: Margie (Loring) Dague of Bowie, MD; and several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 10am until time of memorial service and celebration of Wendell’s life at 12 noon at Sand Hill United Methodist Church with Pastors Monica Salvo and Lisa Fox officiating.
